Yosemite Valley: A Photo Essay

Washington Column and Half Dome

Many of the US's National Parks have at least one natural feature that is iconic in nature--you see a picture of it and you know exactly where the picture was taken. Zion has its arch. Golden Gate National Recreation Area has the Golden Gate Bridge. Grand Canyon has, well, the Grand Canyon. Yosemite's most iconic feature is, in my opinion, Half Dome. Not only is it difficult to take pictures in the eastern Yosemite Valley and not include Half Dome in the background; a stylized Half Dome can be found on almost every trail sign, park service and concessioner vehicle, and piece of letterhead in Yosemite.

As much as I wanted to include only one image of Half Dome in this collection, I couuldn't limit myself in that way; there were too many good ones. So, this is the first of four.
