The LeConte Memorial is the Yosemite headquarters for the Sierra Club. Originally located at the Happy Isles trailhead (starting point of the Joseph Muir Trail, which extends to Mount Whitney, several hundred miles to the south), the building was moved to this location with the help of Ansel Adams. During summer months, the LeConte Memorial is the focal point of the Sierra Club's interpretive activities.
Designed by a Berkeley-based contemporary of Bernard Maybeck and Julia Morgan, the memorial is named after Joseph LeConte, one of founding members of the Sierra Club. LeConte was also one of the original faculty members of the College of California, which later became the University of California.
